Natural Body Motions | Sit - Calm Sit without Food

In this video, we explore the benefits of teaching a natural, relaxed sit in a way that nurtures a calm, peaceful state of mind. We also look at the differences and benefits of teaching the sit in this way, as opposed to teaching the sit in return for food or a toy.

Being able to communicate a calm, relaxed sit is an essential building block for resolving a host of other issues, including over excitement and frustration, reactivity and aggression, fear nervousness and anxiety. we can use this sit as an outcome to behaviours that we don’t want, or don’t agree with - as the foundation of what is called “Conflict Resolution”. Your dog will learn that calmness is the best way to resolve disagreements in the home and outside on a walk.

Being able to ask your dog to relax in this way is also an essential communication system for nervous or fearful dogs. Asking your dog to relax though the sit is a much more effective way of resolving fear or anxiety than trying to ‘reassure’ our dogs by giving affection to an anxious state.
